COAST GUARD SWIM TEAM MEET GUIDE (Revised 10 JUNE 1998) NOTE: Following is an outline of what is necessary to do in order for the CGST to have an organized swim meet. All positions are to be filled by CGST, unless otherwise noted. Please keep this handout for future reference. 1. Order of Events. a. Begins with six year olds and under, followed by 7 & 8 year olds, 9 & 10, 11 & 12, 13 & 14, then Seniors, alternating between girls first and boys second in the following events: (1) Butterfly; (2) Backstroke; (3) Breaststroke; (4) Freestyle; (5) Individual Medley; (6) Medley Relay; (7) Freestyle Relay. For example, the first event of any meet would be 6 and under girls swimming butterfly, followed by 6 and under boys swimming butterfly, then 7 & 8 year old girls swimming butterfly, etc. b. There are up to 7 different strokes swimmers compete in. (1) Butterfly; (2) Back Stroke; (3) Breast Stroke; (4) Free Style; (5) Individual Medley: 1 swimmer does 4 different strokes in following order: (a) Butterfly (b) Backstroke (c) Breaststroke (d) Freestyle (6) Medley Relay: 4 swimmers, each swimming 1/4 of prescribed distance (100, 200 or 400 meters) continuously in following order: (a) Butterfly (b) Backstroke (c) Breaststroke (d) Freestyle (7) Free-Style Relay: 4 swimmers, each swimming 1/4 of prescribed distance (100, 200 or 400 meters) using any stroke(s). 2. Head Coach. Day before a meet: a. Decides, with assistant coach(es), what event each swimmer will compete in. (1) Three fastest swimmers in each event will swim in the "finals" competition while the remainder of the swimmers in that event swim "consolation". (2) "Finals" count for points, whereas "consolations" do not; but ribbons are still given for the first twelve places (except disqualifications) in both competitions. b. With the Swim Team Coordinator (STC), Meet Worker Coordinator (MWC) and Table Worker Coordinator (TWC), completes a blue or pink card for each boy or girl, respectively, for each event they will swim. Day of meet: c. Meets with Starter, Referee (STC), and Head Timer to coordinate signals and discuss any last minute business. 3. Swim Team Coordinator (STC), Day before a meet: a. Calls and verifies assignments of volunteers to the various jobs. b. Upon receipt of the cards from the visiting team, the STC and Table Worker Coordinator (TWC) fill in the names of those who are swimming in the "finals" and "consolations" on the long white/pink/yellow score (heat) sheets that the Scorers use, (1) The score sheets should be marked "FINALS" and "CONSOLATIONS" accordingly. Day of meet: c. Meets with Starter, Head Timer and Coaches to coordinate signals and discuss any last minute business. d. Posts a chart (or a copy of the heat sheets) showing who will swim in each event at the pool. e. Acts as Referee during a swim meet. (1) Normally works with the Starter and is called whenever a problem arises. (2) Upon confirmation of a false start with the Starter, the Referee informs the swimmer if they are disqualified because of a false start. 4. Table Worker Coordinator (TWC)/Head Scorer: Day before a meet: a. Works with the STC to complete pink and blue cards and heat sheets (see STC duties) Day of meet: b. Gets the containers with watches, forms, stationery, calculators, ribbons, etc., for the Scoring/Ribbon Table, Timers and Judges: c. Meet with the STC and ensure the following positions are filled and training given, if necessary: (1) As Head Scorer, the TWC records the times and the order of finish on the score (heat) sheets and adds up the points to keep a running tally of the teams' scores. (a) Scoring for individuals is five (5) points for first place, three (3) points for second place and one (1) point for third place. Seven (7) points are awarded to the winning relay team and zero (0) points to any other relay teams in each event. (b) If three swimmers from the same team "sweep" an event, i.e., they place first, second and third in same event, only the first and second place finishers score points for their team. No points are awarded for third place in that event. (c) For home meets, the original score sheet shall be retained for turn-in to GMSDL prior to the City Meet. The yellow copy shall be retained in the CGST's files and the pink copy will be given to the visiting team. When the CGST is the visiting team, then they will take home the pink copy of the score sheets. (d) Ensures the visiting team's DQ slips, Sweep Judges results, ribbons, pink/blue cards and the pink (last) copies of the score sheets are given to the visiting coach. (2) Starter/Announcer: 1 (from home team). (a) Meets with Referee (STC), Head Timer and Coaches to coordinate signals and discuss any last minute business. (b) Upon signal from the Referee (STC), assumes full control of the swimmers from the time they approach the starting block until a fair start has been achieved. (c) Announces to the swimmers to report to the Clerk of Course and the distance and the event they will be swimming. (d) When swimmers are ready, directs them to "take your mark" and sounds horn to begin the event. (e) Tells the spectators what is happening and announces the results of each event. (3) Runners: 2 (1 from each team). (a) Literally run the pink and blue cards from the Timers, results from the Sweep Judges, and any disqualification (DQ) slips from the Stroke & Turn Judges to the Scorers after the swimmers finish their event. (4) Scorers: 2 (1 from each team). (a) Collect the pink and blue cards and DQ's from the Runners. (b) Mark disqualified swimmers accordingly on their pink/blue card; (c) Average the times on the pink/blue cards; (d) Compare Sweep Judges rank ordering with the official times; (e) Writes in the swimmers order of finish on the pink/blue card. (5) Ribbon Writers: 3 (2 from visiting team). (a) Write the swimmer's official time, their name, and their event on the back of their appropriate ribbons so the ribbons can be completed and given to coaches immediately after the meet. (b) Give ribbons only to First through Third Place in Medleys and Relays, while the other strokes give ribbons through Twelfth Place. 5. Meet Worker Coordinator (MWC)/Head Timer: Day of meet: a. Meets with Starter, Referee (STC), and Coaches to coordinate signals and discuss any last minute business. b. Under the Swim Team Coordinators' direction, the MWC acts as Head Timer and shall, prior to each meet, ensure the following positions are filled and training given, if necessary: (1) As Head Timer, the MWC should start their watch with the gun/horn so that he/she can be the backup second time on any lane that may have a watch (or a timer!) malfunction. (2) Timers: 12 (Six from each team). (a) Are 2 to a lane, one from each team. (b) Record swimmers times on the appropriate pink or blue cards. (c) Start their watches with the gun/horn and stop as soon as the swimmer touches the wall (with either one hand or two hands, depending on the stroke) at finish. (3) Sweep Judges 4 (Two from each team): (a) Are 2 on each side and at the end of the pool. (b) Write down the order each swimmer finish in each event. (4) Stroke and Turn Judges (2) (One from each team): (a) Must be certified by the Greater Mobile Swimming and Dive League (or comparable league) by attending sponsored training. (b) Are 1 on each side of the pool, walking abreast of the swimmers. (c) "Area of jurisdiction" is from one end of the pool to the opposite. (d) Ensure swimmers do strokes and turns properly and disqualify those that do not. (e) Shall immediately raise their hand to signify a disqualification. (f) Shall give the swimmer the advantage on a judgment call. (g) Also serve as Take-Off Judges for relays to make certain that no swimmer leaves the block early. (5) Clerk of Course: 1 (from home team) (a) Ensures swimmers have their respective pink/blue cards and are seated immediately behind their respective lanes, ready to swim in their event when called by the Announcer. (b). Responsible for ensuring relay swimmers are in their correct order. (6) Kid Control: 2 (1 from each team). (a) Working with the Clerk of Course, ensures swimmers for next event have their respective pink/blue cards and are ready to report to the Clerk of Course when called by the Announcer. (b). Helps to maintain "control" over the swimmers as they anxiously await their turn to swim! 6. Equipment Manager: a. Ensures the tables for the Announcer, Scorers and Ribbon Writers are set up. b. Sets up chairs for the Clerk of Course (where the swimmers go to get their cards right before they swim). c. Ensures the start system is set up and charged. d. Solicits everyone to help store all the equipment used during the meet and clean up the concession and pool areas. (End) |
